DIY Laundry Detergent in 4 Easy Steps!

Monday, July 7, 2014

What you need:
A gallon jug - I use Arizona Tea jugs
Any type of liquid dish soap - I use Palmolive (5 tbs)
Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (4 tbs)
20 Mule Team Borax (4 tbs)
A measuring table spoon
Optional - funnel
*This will yield I gallon of detergent

Step 1: Add powder ingredients to jug, this is where you would use a funnel if needed.

Step 2: Slowly add hot tap water and swish until borax and washing soda is pretty much dissolved.

Step 3: Slowly add cool tap water to jug, trying not to make suds. Fill the jug almost to the top. If you use an Arizona Tea jug like the ones I have, we fill it to the date stamp. If not then about 2 inches from the top.

Step 4: Add the 5 tablespoons of dish soap, then gently swish to mix. I simply turn the jug upside down a couple times, until it looks like the dish soap is combined. Then it's ready to use! We use about a 1/4 a cup per large load.

The Jug on the left has blue Palmolive with Oxy Clean and on the right is the regular green kind.

We have been making laundry detergent like this for over 2 years now! Sorry I didn't share this sooner! I literally can't remember the last time we bought laundry detergent. Washing clothes for 4 people is expensive and we save so much money doing it this way, and they come out just as clean. The only thing that I missed was the smell of laundry detergent, but my wife Jes found Downy Unstopables to help with that! It's a scent booster, and since we don't have any allergies I add them and they work great!
